I work with individuals, both members of a couple, or as much family as you can convince to show up. Why? Family Systems research and theory shows surprising patterns in how people are part of units that function as a whole. Ever notice your partner act really differently when you visit their family? Their role in their family of origin may be a lot different than she or he is trying to be as an adult. If you bring in more people, you can facilitate bigger and more lasting change.
Generally, I think people appreciate being seen and heard for what matters to them. And what matters for each individual varies a great deal. Some people feel with all their hearts, some people believe in logic, some people live through faith, some believe the only virtue is in empirical data, and there are many more ways of being in and seeing the world.
